Thompson's have used a specific variety of Kelp called Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus).
Because of the ability of Bladderwrack to accumulate minerals, it is high in a variety of trace minerals and is one of the best natural sources of Iodine. Iodine is a trace element and is an integral part of thyroxine, a principal hormone produced by the thyroid gland.
Thyroid hormones are necessary for maintaining normal metabolism in all cells of the body. Due to decreased consumption of iodised table salt, more people are likely to be susceptible to iodine deficiency and consequently suffer thyroid dysfunction.
Through regulation of thyroid function Bladderwrack may increase basal metabolic rate and, by assisting with metabolism, help maintain a healthy weight.
