Mode of Action Milk Thistle has potent liver-protective activity due to its silymarin content, more commonly known as silybin. The protective effects are related principally to its antioxidant effects that are many times more potent than Vitamin E; These include: Preventing the depletion of glutathione induced by alcohol and other toxins. Silybin also inhibits the enzyme lipoxygenase, responsible for the production and subsequent damage caused by leukotrienes. Silybin may also have beneficial effects in managing some skin conditions including psoriasis, where these are related to leukotriene production. Dandelion Root has beneficial effects on the liver by stimulating bile production, while the leaf can help the kidney clear waste and other toxins. Artichoke Leaves have a long history in the management of liver problems. Its active ingredients include cynarin and have shown protective and regenerating effects on the liver. Artichoke also has cholerectic effects, transporting bile to the gall bladder. Astragalus assists the immune system while Peumus (Boldo) acts as a cholagogue and choleretic. Taurine plays an important role in maintaining the composition of bile and the solubility of cholesterol, and also has antioxidant activity and other actions.
